Muti Conducts The Firebird
Panufnik, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky
Friday, October 3, 2014
Tchaikovsky’s five-movement Third Symphony is among his liveliest and most exultant works, brimming with courtly charm and concluding with a celebratory Polonaise. Panufnik’s Concerto in modo antico continues the Polish theme, reviving tunes by Polish composers of the past in a quasi-Baroque work for trumpet and orchestra. Rounding out the concert is Stravinsky’s popular Firebird Suite, with its seductive “Princesses’ Round” and ferocious “Infernal Dance of Kaschei.”
Tchaikovsky’s purely orchestral pieces are favorites on the ballet stage. And no choreographer was more inspired by Tchaikovsky than George Balanchine, the Russian-born founder of the New York City Ballet, who drew on the Polish symphony for one of his signature works. Of Panufnik's Concerto in modo antico, in which he will solo, Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin admits: “It’s not like any piece I’ve ever played before, I have to say. I’m happy to have learned it and happy the Maestro suggested it, because I truly think I could have gone my entire career and not even known that it existed.” Read more at Sounds & Stories.
This year marks the centennial of Andrzej Panufnik, once hailed by Sir Georg Solti as “the finest protagonist in the European tradition of music-making.” Though perhaps as not well known as his near contemporaries Karol Szymanowski, Krzysztof Penderecki or Witold Lutoslawski, Panufnik is no less significant.
