Symphony No. 5, Mahler
Program Notes

Mahler 5

8:00 PM
Mendelssohn, Mahler
Thursday, October 9, 2014

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Robert Chen plays Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto, the composer’s last great orchestral work and one of the most popular violin concertos of all time. Mahler’s gorgeous Fifth Symphony reflects many moments of personal significance to the composer, including the ravishing Adagietto that was a musical love letter to his wife, Alma.

Mahler’s Fifth Symphony begins with a despairing funeral march and ends as adversity is overcome. Yet how? What exactly is Mahler saying about the human condition? Read more at Sounds & Stories.

Please note: Donald Runnicles is replacing guest conductor Jaap van Zweden, who has withdrawn on the advice of his doctor.
