Symphony No. 9, Beethoven

Muti Conducts Beethoven 9

8:00 PM
Sold Out
Thursday, September 18, 2014

Join us for a rousing start to the 2014/15 season when Riccardo Muti conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Beethoven’s most glorious and jubilant masterpiece. An exhilarating testament to the human spirit, Beethoven’s Ninth bursts with brooding power and kinetic energy and culminates in the exultant hymn, “Ode to Joy.”

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we welcome more than 1,000 special guests to performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony led by Maestro Riccardo Muti and featuring musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Chorus and renowned guest soloists. Composed late in Beethoven’s life, this symphony is an act of transcendence over adversity, written when the composer was nearing complete deafness. Known and loved for its musical richness and its message of joy, bringing all people together, it inspires all of us who have faced challenges, adversity and loss, and who have discovered the solace and inspiration that music and poetry offer. We are pleased to share the joy and genius of Beethoven with our loyal patrons as well as with guests who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience this remarkable work.
