This event takes place at the Art Institute of Chicago — Fullerton Hall
Although trained in the well-regarded genre of portraiture, Raphaelle Peale turned his attention to the lowest genre of the hierarchy: still life. He became America’s first professional still life painter and a master of the genre with his refined and serenely balanced paintings. Ruth Crawford-Seeger also paved her own way, absorbing influences from many sources but ultimately finding her own distinctive voice, as in the String Quartet of 1931, one of her finest modernist compositions.
