CSO at University of Illinois

7:30 PM
Saturday, October 12, 2013

Please note: This event takes place at the Krannert Center at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

A cornerstone of Krannert Center’s classical music programming is its relationship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra—a cultural pride and joy of not only our state but also our nation. Since Krannert Center’s opening in April 1969, the CSO, under the direction of conductors Sir Georg Solti, Leonard Slatkin, Hugo Wolff, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Riccardo Muti, and other prominent leaders, has performed in the acoustically and visually stunning Foellinger Great Hall more than 25 times and made some of its seminal recordings there, including the landmark Solti-led Symphony No. 9 of Beethoven. This richly diverse program features Mozart’s sprightly Divertimento in D Major; the stirring drama of Hindemith’s lyrical Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, played by CSO concertmaster Robert Chen in this 50th year since Hindemith’s death; and Prokofiev’s suite from the ballet Romeo and Juliet, widely held as one of classical music’s most powerful and beautiful masterpieces.
