Beyond the Score: Things Our Fathers Loved

3:00 PM
Sunday, April 27, 2014

Composed in the early years of the 20th century,  Ives'  gorgeously romantic and nostalgic Second Symphony looks back lovingly to the long-vanished world of the composer's small-town New England childhood. Magically, it weaves together familiar melodies taught to Ives by his father, a Union Army bandleader in the Civil War and Ives' greatest musical influence: tunes by Stephen Foster, marches from the Civil War, barn-dance fiddle tunes and old church hymns, with fragments of famous pieces by Bach and Brahms. No music written before it had ever sounded so unique, and so American!

Designed for newcomers to classical music and longtime aficionados alike, each Beyond the Score program takes you on a dramatic exploration of a composer’s music. With live actors, stunning visual projections and musical excerpts played by the CSO, the compelling story of the composer’s life and art unfolds, illuminating the world that shaped the work’s creation. After an intermission, the Orchestra returns to play the work in its entirety.

Join us after the Friday evening presentation for a Q&A with the Beyond the Score creative team!
