Dvorák, Berlioz, Shostakovich
Friday, November 30, 2012

Written when he was only 19, Shostakovich's First Symphony already shows his distinctive blend of romanticism and dry, sarcastic humor. It opens simply with a duet between solo trumpet and bassoon against sparse accompaniment and swells to a resounding orchestra climax. Dvorák crafted four vivid symphonic interpretations of traditional Czech folktales, including The Golden Spinning Wheel, in which a king is finally united with the beautiful peasant girl he loves. Alice Coote lends her dark-hued mezzo-soprano to Berlioz's popular setting of French poems by Théophile Gautier.
