2012/13 Civic Orchestra Season

Beethoven 7

Monday, October 8, 8:00

Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot opens the 2012/13 season with Beethoven’s popular Seventh Symphony, known for its wild energy and dancelike rhythms. Also on the program is Respighi’s symphonic poem Fountains of Rome, part of the composer’s well-known Roman Trilogy, which depicts Roman fountains at different periods of the day and night.

Bach & Haydn

Monday, December 17, 8:00

Harry Bicket, a master of Baroque and early Classical repertoire, leads Civic in a program of Handel, Bach and Haydn. The Overture from Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, commissioned by King George II for a grand fireworks display in London, is followed by Bach’s timeless Concerto for Violin and Oboe and Haydn’s jubilant Symphony No. 102.

A Celebration Of Youth In Music

The Civic Orchestra joins forces with musicians from Youth Orchestra of the Americas and Chicago area high school students in a “Celebration of Youth in Music.” In this culminating event of the 2013 Chicago Youth in Music Festival, visionary conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto leads an international super orchestra in a concert that unites young people from across the Western Hemisphere to share in the transformational power of music.

Sheherazade

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade serves as a dazzling showcase for the talented, versatile members of Civic under the direction of Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot. The exotic, delightful four-movement suite is based on the Arabian Nights legends. The Enchanted Lake, written by Rimsky- Korsakov’s contemporary Anatoly Liadov, paints a mystical scene of fairy-tale beauty.

Rivers: Nature. Power. Culture.

CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma  joins the Civic Orchestra in celebration of the CSO’s RIVERS Festival. Led by Cliff Colnot, the musical selections are inspired by nature and flowing waters as symbols of discovery, cultural development and communication. Ma shines in Haydn’s brilliant Cello Concerto in C Major and the program closes with Beethoven’s nature-inspired Pastoral Symphony.

Prokofiev 5

Prokofiev said that his Fifth Symphony was “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.” Jaap van Zweden leads a powerful journey through this masterpiece, from its haunting first movement to its manic finale.
