Anna Clyne is a composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music, combining resonant soundscapes with propelling textures that weave, morph and collide in dramatic explosions. Her work, which includes collaborative projects with cutting-edge choreographers, filmmakers, visual artists and musicians, has been commissioned and performed worldwide. She was appointed one of Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Mead Composers-in-Residence by Music Director Riccardo Muti, along with Mason Bates, and took up the post in the 2010/11 season for a term of two years. Recently, Maestro Muti extended Clyne’s and Bates’ terms for two more years, in order to continue to explore the collaborations they have begun with various partners throughout Chicago, in support of the CSOA’s ongoing commitment to collaborating with today’s leading artists and arts institutions.
Clyne is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including eight consecutive ASCAP Plus Awards, a Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Clutterbuck Award from the University of Edinburgh, awards from Meet the Composer, The American Music Center, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Jerome Foundation and International Artist Sponsorship and a 2006 Commission Prize from ASCAP and the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) “in recognition of outstanding achievement and demonstrated ability.” She was a finalist for ASCAP’s Morton Gould Composer Award and the U.K. Tovey Composition Competition and also was nominated for a 2010 British Composer Award.
Additional recent honors include participation in the American Composers Orchestra Underwood New Music Readings, Bang on a Can Marathon and Summer Institute, Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, Osvaldo Golijov/Dawn Upshaw Professional Training Workshop at Carnegie Hall, River to River Festival, Free Advice, a composer/choreographer event at the Joyce SoHO, Young Concert Artists Composer Program and a master class with Pierre Boulez in New York City; she also was nominated for the New York Van Lier Roulette Fellowship.
Clyne’s Night Ferry was commissioned by the CSO and receives its premiere by the Orchestra in February 2012; it’s also taken on tour to California under the baton of Music Director Riccardo Muti. Clyne’s other commissions include American Composers Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Electric Kompany, Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, Opus 21, Janus Trio, Jerome Foundation, New York Voices (a collaboration between the Albany Symphony and the New York State Archives), Roulette (for ETHEL), SEAMUS/ASCAP (for Kathy Supové), Seattle Chamber Players (curated by Alex Ross), TACTUS and the Los Angeles–based Hysterica Dance Company, where she is resident composer.
Clyne’s music has been composed for and programmed by such artists as Björk, ETHEL and BalletX. Her orchestral works have received performances by the American Composers Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, Minnesota Orchestra and Manhattan School of Music’s Composers Orchestra, under conductors including Riccardo Muti, Marin Alsop, Pablo Heras-Casado, George Manahan, Jeffrey Milarsky, Alan Pierson, Osmo Vänskä and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Her chamber works have been performed by Opus 21, Seattle Chamber Players, Electric Kompany, janus trio, Tactus, musicians from the London Sinfonietta and members of the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Her solo works have been widely performed by such musicians as Kathy Supove (piano), Laurie DeLuca (clarinet), Patrick O’Keefe (bass clarinet), Heather Conner (piano), Benjamin Elton Capps (cello), Eileen Mack (clarinet), Argeo Ascani (saxophone), Christian Rodriguez (clarinet) and Al Cerulo (percussion).
In New York, Clyne’s music has been presented at 21st Century Schizoid Music Series, Art Resources Transfer, Carnegie Hall, Columbia University, d.u.m.b.o. Dance Festival, Ear to the Earth Festival, Joyce SoHo, Le Poisson Rouge, Manhattan School of Music, Miller Theater, Monkeytown, MoMA, New York Musical Theatre Festival, Symphony Space, TIXE Arts Space, Tribeca New Music Festival, World Financial Center and Zankel Hall.
Internationally, her work has been programmed at major venues and fringe venues across the globe, including performances in Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Hungary and in the U.K. at the University of Edinburgh and the Barbican Centre.
As a passionate collaborator, Anna Clyne has worked with many of today’s most inventive and pioneering artists that include choreographers Kitty McNamee, Leda Meredith, Pascal Rekoert; painter Y.J. Cho; sound artists Jody Elff and Jeremy Flower; filmmaker Michael Bates; visual artists Joshua Bryan, Luke Dubois, Jon Niborg Speier, Rokhshad Nourdeh and Joshue Ott/Superdraw; and writers Tom Bolt and Rich Blomquist and Scott Jacobson of The Daily Show. She also has worked for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Hysterica Dance Company in Los Angeles, New York Youth Symphony and Oakland’s School for Children with Special Needs in Edinburgh, U.K.
Born in London and raised in the U.K., Clyne began her musical studies on a piano with randomly missing keys. At the age of 11, she wrote and performed her first fully notated piece for flute and piano. Clyne holds a Bachelor of Music with honors degree from Edinburgh University and a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where she received an academic-based scholarship. Her principal teachers include Julia Wolfe, Marina Adamia and Marjan Mozetich. She is a member of the American Music Center, American Composers Forum, Electronic Music Foundation and the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
